Tamworth Castle

It was one of the most beautiful days in England yet.  It is seldom above 75 here but even less seldom is the sky cloudless and blue.  Few people stayed in doors as they came to the park or sat in outdoor pubs to soak in the sun.

I was in Coventry on business and looked at the map on the way home to see if there was anything historical nearby for me to quickly visit.  Of the three things Tamworth Castle was the quickest as it was just off the motorway (not highway).  As I parked my car I saw this cute little girl eating an ice cream cone.  Her parents were kind enough to allow me to take a picture.  There aren’t many days in September a person would be outside eating ice cream in sunshine.

The castle itself was really old – built around 1150.  It was a small castle but much larger as you walked through all of the rooms.  It was lived in until about 100 years ago.  The castle sits on a hill now surrounded by buildings and a park but at one time all of this was water.  The ground had been dug out around the castle and filled in as a mote.

This castle is supposedly haunted by two female ghosts.  They have guided tours and stories but I just ran through the property quickly.  As in all castles, the stonework was amazing and some of the wooden floors still in used were built in 1200.  King James I visited the castle during his lifetime as had many other royalty.  Here is the room he stayed in although it was decorated differently at the time he stayed there.

I took this picture looking through the Lord’s bedroom at Tamworth’s cathedral that was built in 1350.

The great hall was where most activity in the castle centered around.

Bill and I did have a few moments of fun as we rushed through the castle.

As I left the property and quickly headed to the care I snapped one last shot of this beautiful English day.
